The Federal Work Study program allows students to earn money while they attend college. This program is also based on financial need, but the money is not available in one lump sum because it is earned as the hours are worked. Federal Work Study is used primarily for personal expenses while in school.
This program provides jobs on and off campus for both undergraduates and graduate students who have financial need. The program encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.
You'll be paid at least the federal minimum wage, or more depending upon the type of work and the skills the job requires. The total work study award depends on the time you apply, your level of financial need and your school's funding level. The amount of money you can earn in the work study program will not exceed the total dollar amount of your financial aid award.
If you work on campus, you'll probably work for your school. If you work off campus, you're likely to work for a private nonprofit organization or public agency. Occasionally for-profit employers use work study students when the jobs they can offer relate to the students' course of study.
Work study is an excellent option because the more you earn, the less you'll need to borrow in loans and pay back later. In addition, you will gain valuable work experience which can be beneficial in your future.
