The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Annual Conference this year in San Antonio, Texas. As a diamond sponsor, Nelnet was delighted to join with HACU to celebrate this event and their “20 years of Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success.”

The conference, entitled unofficially kicked off with a Youth Leadership Fair at Our Lady of the Lake University where the 1,000 student participants received information about financial aid and the college planning process. A discussion panel was also held to enlighten the students about the often confusing college financial aid process.
The conference officially started on October 29 and was hosted at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. Nelnet campus directors were on hand to discuss the HACU Education Loan Program (HELP) and increase overall awareness of Nelnet’s emphasis on Spanish-language-targeted products and services.
Another HACU sponsored event that benefited the surrounding community was a College and Career Fair, which provided mini-workshops about college planning and highlighted many of the useful tools available on the Nelnet College Planning Website.
At the VIP Reception, HACU president and CEO, Dr. Antonio R. Flores, was presented with a leadership award honoring his hard work and endless efforts in advancing the goals of HACU and making the Hispanic community successful in the higher education arena.

Overall, the HACU conference was a tremendous success in stressing the importance of higher education to the Hispanic community. Nelnet was thrilled to have been a sponsor and looks forward to “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: A National Imperative for the 21st Century” at the 2007 HACU Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
