Nelnet teams with ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for a “529” surprise to a deserving family

For the second time in 2006, Nelnet teamed with ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to assist individuals who have an educational need. Nelnet surprised Kenneth Machacek, Teresa Fullerton, and their five children with 529 College Savings Plan accounts in the amount of $2,500 each on November 21. In addition, Peterson’s, a Nelnet company, supplied the family with college and test preparation books.

"It is such a wonderful thing that Nelnet stepped up once again to help the Machacek- Fullerton family with college savings plans," said Diane Korman, senior producer for the show. "We thank them for joining with us to make a difference."

“Once again, Nelnet is happy to participate in such a kindhearted program,” said Nelnet President Jeff Noordhoek. “We believe in making educational dreams come true, and what a better way to accomplish that goal than to help a family in our own community.”

Nelnet seeks to increase opportunities for students across the nation by offering a full spectrum of educational products and services to families, giving them the tools to make the right education choices and pay for them as well. Scholarships are another avenue for increasing opportunities: Nelnet and the Nelnet Foundation provide more than one million dollars in scholarships and charitable contributions annually. Together they fund local and national organizations as well as assist individuals to promote higher education access for students.

The 529 plans were open for contributions from the community as well.
