Affinity Spotlight: SUNY Cortland

The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association serves more than 55,000 alumni through a variety of special programs and communications. Located 35 minutes south of Syracuse, New York, the SUNY Cortland community strives to maintain a strong connection between the college and its alumni.

Special Programs
The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association participates in a variety of special events throughout the year to foster and encourage the well-being of the College and its graduates. Goofs and Goblets is a co-sponsored event with Career Services that brings together College staff, area business leaders, alumni and SUNY Cortland students in a dinner-interview setting.

In July, nearly 800 alumni and friends return for the annual Alumni Reunion Weekend. Milestone reunions are highlighted as well as their Half Century Club. Finally, the Alumni Affairs Office works with the Student Government Association (SGA) to sponsor the Student Alumni Association (SAA). SAA members are student leaders who assist with major events and special programs. Working alongside the Alumni Association, the SAA helps promote its many activities and programs.

Alumni Communication
The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association maintains their connection to alumni by providing several forms of communication. The Alumni Association publishes Columns, a newspaper that is published three times a year with a fourth edition Annual Report that provides donor information. Alumni Office personnel contribute to its content and production. Another vital communication tool with alumni is the Web page and e-mail directory, designed and maintained by office staff. In addition, they publish and sell an alumni directory. Finally, a variety of affinity services are offered to alumni, including credit card, retail and insurance programs. Nelnet’s Affinity Consolidation program fits right in with their many special offerings to recent graduates.

The Relationship
Michelina Gibbons, Associate Director of Alumni Affairs values the relationship their association has with Nelnet. They are pleased to offer SUNY Cortland graduates the opportunity to work with a company they can trust. “Nelnet is a quality company with a quality product and we strive to offer our alumni benefits they can use to improve their lives.”

While working to improve alumni member benefits is important, Nelnet also works hard to provide excellent service to the association itself through individual attention from regional representatives. Michelina offered great praise for their representative, Marty Blind.“Our Relationship with our rep has been phenomenal,” she said. “He keeps us informed on important trends or issues in the world of debt-consolidations and he is very reassuring.” This is the type of relationship that Nelnet Affinity Marketing strives to establish and maintain with every partner: A win-win situation for the association and Nelnet.
