Nelnet reaches out to Hurricane Katrina victims

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina’s destruction, Nelnet announced it would automatically provide forbearance on student loans for borrowers in the impacted areas. Nelnet also initiated an employee giving program to support the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund, providing a 100% match to donations received from its associates. In addition, Nelnet set up a $250,000 fund to distribute 1,000 Visa® gift cards nationwide to displaced college students. In total, Nelnet has donated more than $400,000 to the Hurricane Katrina disaster recovery efforts, including an initial contribution to the American Red Cross of $10,000.
