Nelnet teams with ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
When ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition selected Essie Reed, known to everyone as “Big Mama,” to rebuild her home following Hurricane Wilma, they also contacted Nelnet to participate in the surprise. For its part, Nelnet created the Big Mama-Nelnet Scholarship Fund to provide more opportunities for Big Mama’s “kids” to attend college. Many of the children who seek Big Mama’s assistance come from homes fraught with drug, alcohol, poverty, and violence-related problems. Reed teaches the kids the meaning of caring and self-reliance and how to love themselves so that they can love others. She also urges them to pray and use the wisdom and knowledge they have to overcome their problems.

Essie "Big Mama" Reed poses with Nelnet's Lidiette Esquivel and Eric Solomon, and her sons Christopher, Sam, and Brennan.

“We were excited to help Big Mama with her quest to guide young people in the right direction,” said Nelnet President Jeff Noordhoek. “The Big Mama-Nelnet Scholarship Fund will help her to make their educational dreams possible.”

Troy University visits Nelnet's Financial Aid Solutions call center
Members of the Troy University Financial Aid Office recently visited the Financial Aid Solutions (FAS) call center, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. As an FAS school, inbound calls to the Troy University Financial Aid Office are actually seamlessly routed to the FAS call center and handled by Nelnet.

In addition to reducing workload, Nelnet’s Financial Aid Solutions, which can be customized to fit each school’s particular needs, connects students with a knowledgeable Financial Aid Representative within seconds. This reduced call load provides the partnering Financial Aid Office the opportunity to concentrate on other matters such as electronic processing, enrollment management, and personal student counseling.

Since partnering with the FAS team in March 2005, Nelnet has answered more than 66,000 calls for Troy University. “Thanks to Nelnet, our staff is now able to focus on students who walk in and the paperwork students would like processed for 2005-2006. We are able to process paper faster and see far more students due to the reduced phone calls," said Fred Carter, Troy's Associate Vice Chancellor, Financial Aid. "Students are able to get their questions answered faster than ever before."
