Reaching the "College-Seeking Family"

Nelnet is dedicated to educating the college seeking family about college and financial aid. Currently, our High School Campus Directors are involved in a number of exciting initiatives aimed at helping these families obtain the information they need.

  • Available throughout the school year, Nelnet's High School Campus Directors are available as on-site resources for Financial Aid Nights and College Fairs to discuss financial aid options and help guide parents and students through the confusing world of paperwork. Additionally, they can provide counselors with educational college planning materials and resources for their students.
  • Many of the High School Campus directors are actively involved in College Goal Sunday, which is a nationwide effort to educate and help parents and students fill out the FASFA.
  • An exciting new feature this year that will be introduced is a web-based seminar on financial aid. Many parents are not able to attend Financial Aid Nights at the local high school because of time restraints or other obligations. This is a solution meant to help the families access the information without leaving their homes.
  • This year, there will be $195,000 scholarship dollars given away through the Nelnet College Planning website. The only requirement for the student to apply is to sign up through the website. There are three types of scholarships available: a national level, state-specific and Hispanic directed. The High School Campus Directors work in conjunction with high school guidance counselors to help students find the information they need for all facets of college planning. The College Planning website is full of helpful information about scholarship searches, admissions timelines, testing information and financial aid options.
  • Another scholarship opportunity being promoted is through the “Get A Jump” Student Aid Answer Book from Peterson’s. The book directs students to an online form for a chance for $5,000 scholarship. The “Get A Jump” book is filled with answers to the most common financial aid questions. There were a total of 242,250 copies sent out to 1,849 schools across the nation.
  • There are two monthly electronic newsletters that are sent out to parents and to students. They are filled with time specific information based on the month. For example, in January the student newsletter would be focused on filling out the FASFA. There are also quarterly emails to counselors apprising them of pertinent information, like scholarship opportunities available for their students.
